 Our Mission

The mission of Tanum Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church is to invite others to be partners with us in the Gospel of Jesus Christ through worship, sharing Sacraments, witness and service in the spirit of love and Christian fellowship.

Built in 1874 for use as Tanum Lutheran Church and Parsonage, this relic of the past stood for many years as a monument to the spiritual dedication of a group of Norwegian pioneers.

A Bit of Our History

The Tanum Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1872. It was originally known as the Tanum Lutheran Church.  This was the first Lutheran congregation in Door County.

On February 2, 1970, the Forest Church was destroyed by fire. Tanum facilities were used until 1973 when the two congregations merged, as "Tanum Forest"

In 1997, as part of its 125th anniversary celebration, Tanum Forest Church was recognized by the Door County Historical Society as an Historical site.

Worship Hours

At Tanum Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church, our worship services are:

4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 9:00 a.m. on Sundays.

During the school year, we also have youth education (Sunday School and Confirmation), on Sundays.

Our Beliefs

Lutherans believe in the Triune God. God created and loves all of creation — the earth and the seas and all of the world's inhabitants. We believe that God's Son, Jesus Christ, transforms lives through his death on the cross and his new life, and we trust that God's Spirit is active in the world.

We are part of God's unfolding plan. When we gather for worship, we connect with believers everywhere. When we study the Bible or hear God's word in worship, we are drawn more deeply into God's own saving story.

The convictions shared by Christians from many different traditions are expressed in statements of belief called creeds. These ecumenical creeds that Lutherans affirm and use in worship confess the faith of the church through the ages and around the world.

The Confession of Faith of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is part of our founding constitution. The ELCA accepts the following creeds as true declarations of the faith of this church: The Apostles' Creed — and — The Nicene Creed.
